Tuesday 13th September 2011

... on of those days ... that plans are continously changing ...

Following the morning tea, cereal, bathroom and grabbing all my stuff ... i scrambled out of the house and started my walk to the department ... well aware that today i will need to come back to the house early as i need to get my stuff together before boarding the boat.

Got to the department around 9am and met Joao at the open space and long conversation about several issues. These talks with Joao are becoming increasingly interesting and involving as he considered me as part of DOP and there to help ... which i am very pleased about. Talk about Nitrox operations were definitely converging on looking at the most reasonable setup for DOP. The issue lies in the expense of Oxygen itself at around €300 for what I usually purchase for €12 from Multigas or Poligas ... crazy! Resaon being as i have already mentioned is that its imported from the mainland ... way too complicated ... Poligas would definitely be successful if they had to setup a plant here.

Considering this handicap then the Membrane system of removing Nitrogen from Air to produce Oxygen Enriched Air is the ideal solution ... only problem being ... the equipment is not cheap either ... but after some 3 years they would have made up for the Nitrox Compressor ... so might as well. Joao asked me to enquire into prices for such compressors and so i set to give him some feedback.

After lunch and after having given Joao some prices, we discussed the several issues andthat Bauer alternative was far too expensive to even consider, but the less robust and reliable Cressi-Sub produced a similar system for much less. At this point the issues were known and Joao was satisfied with the information ... now he has to convince people at DOP.

At this same time Joao and Jorge got together to discuss training possibilities and so asked me to draft a proposal for DOP to perform a Nitrox Blender course as well as Nitrox Instructor ... something which i can do with PADI and TDI certifications respectively. So I set to put together these proposals which i submitted round about 5pm when i was about to leave for home.

But how come I’m still in Horta when i should have left ... well the Director informed me that the boat was delayed and was to leave tomorrow morning ... and that there’s the possibility to go on another task ... so its looking good.

Arrived home ... cooked a massive plate of pasta as i was starving ... and prepared my luggage for the next morning. As it was getting late i washed my stuff ... had tea & biscuits while watching TV ... and set myself for the night.

Long day tomorrow ... better get to sleep ... Good night.
